Get To Know Us Better!
The Papier Project was conceived by two women. Who are the brains behind this brainchild, you might ask? Well we’re going to find out as we play a round of ‘Coffee with the Interns’ with our founders: Ayesha Wadhawan (AW) and Sanaa Jhurani (SJ).
Avantika Rajani (from hereon forth to be known as the fabulous intern, or if you had to then ‘The interviewer’)
Yash Mhatre (from hereon forth to be known as the lazy one, or if you prefer ‘The other interviewer’)
SJ : "Can we please take note that these are our interns directing us?"
AR : I’ll start off with the most obvious of them all: How did you two meet?
SJ : “Well, we met at our previous place of work – Heel & Buckle. Ayesha handled E-commerce and I had Marketing & PR as my baby - and it all pretty much took off from there. We were, as they say, a match made in heaven. Colleagues to lunch partners to best friends, and now business partners."
AW : “She pretty much said it all. Just missed out on how she worshipped me, and I tolerated her at the beginning haha, just kidding of course!”
YM : How did you conceive of The Papier Project?
AW : “Well I was in Dubai shopping for stationery, and around the same time Sanaa was in New York scouring the city for a suitable planner; and it dawned on us that there exists no equivalent in India, let alone Bombay! Certainly not one big enough for us stationery fanatics to have heard of! We’d decided it was time for us to rectify this situation, and thus The Papier Project was born.”
AR : “Okay this one requires you to just spit out the first thing that comes to mind. No thinking through your answers! What’s the one thing you like about each other?
SJ : “Her ability to endlessly nag until you get the work done!”
AW : “Her hair!”
(brief awkward silence sets in)
AW : “Aha, you meant personality! Well, not much to work with buuuut if I had to choose I’d go with her ability to organize chaos. Since we’re still growing, chaos reigns supreme. From her desk to her desktop, Sanaa’s on top of it all.”
AR : “What’s your favorite stationery implement?”
YM : “Make this interesting, guess each other’s!”
AW : “I’m going to go with a journal for Sanaa, if there was such an addiction, she’d definitely be afflicted!”
SJ : “You missed my great love for BIC pencils. But journals and BIC’s mechanical pencils were definitely at war in my head. For Ayesha, I’d have to say the same. The woman has a great love for pretty journals.”
YM : “How are your designs conceived? Walk me through your brainstorming”
SJ : “My family definitely has me infected with the travel bug. Having travelled to so many places, experienced so many different cultures it’s hard not to be inspired. Ayesha and I both absolutely devour books, we’re gorging on them every moment we aren’t working - so we’re constantly picking up on ideas and turning someone’s literary work to reality. The Papier Project’s carefully curated ideas incorporate all that we love. Most of our customers see the design, but only we know that each piece of art is a tiny bit of our soul”
AR : “Why stationery?”
AW : “We don’t even realize what a big part of our day it is! From the post it’s we’re setting reminders and deadlines for ourselves on, to the diary we use to keep some semblance of order amidst chaos, to the note card we use for that little personal mark on our correspondence, stationery sees us through it all. Besides, you can tell a lot about a person from the stationery they use, or don’t use for that matter.”
AR : “Walk me through a day at The Papier Project”
AW : “Well we start off with drawing out our task lists for the day, then move on to setting deadlines for all of us, as and…”
YM : (interjects) “You’re forgetting to add ‘nag the interns'"
SJ : “Well now that you mentioned that, did you finish what I gave you?”
YM : (gulps audibly)
YM : “How do you deal with conflict?”
AW : Accept silent treatment!
SJ : We agreed on ‘We talk it out’, what happened to that!? We haven’t had our first big fight yet but if I had to guess, it would be argue it out.
AR : “What are your plans for the future?”
SJ : “Keep your eyes peeled! We have big plans and wings on our feet to travel these distances. More specifically, we’re looking to expand into physical retail and product variants. We want to make The Papier Project more available to our customers and also host other budding indie brands that match our design aesthetic”
AR : “Well done ladies! Torture’s almost over. Just one more to go. Dreams for the future?”
SJ : “Open up a bookstore that smells of freshly brewed coffee, and hopefully write a book.”
AW : “Own a cow.”
(Pin-drop silence, as her audience digests this.)
AR : “Alright Ladies & Gentlemen, on that note - its clearly time to wrap this baby up. That’s our little world of crazy, make sure you stay tuned for more. We’ve got tales to spin and we need your ears!”
